Our History

Since the beginning, our purpose has been simple: to build buildings and build them well for our clients.

Mainbrace was founded by Greg Millson and Peter McKinnon in 1989 on the principles of fairness and integrity. Our focus on clients and our can-do, performance-based culture has allowed us to grow to offices in three states with 240+ staff – some of whom have been with us for over 25 years.

1991Won our first Woolworths project at Dickson ($2.7M)

1993

1993Hired employee #24 Rob Doust (current MD) as an Undergraduate

1996

1996Won our largest project at the time, Wagga Wagga Marketplace ($29.9M)

1997Completed our first Coles project, West Pennant Hills

We have delivered over 1,800 projects and have worked with almost every major retailer in Australia, completing 94% of projects on time. Our focus on building lasting relationships with our clients has meant that 91% of them have trusted us with multiple projects – some with as many as 500!

Our conservative approach and financial discipline means we have never had to rely on debt or overdraft facilities to run our business. Every project is underpinned by sufficient capital, thanks to our strong, straightforward balance sheet.

The health and safety of people are paramount.

The health and safety of people are paramount.

A strong safety culture starts from the top. So, our leaders play an active role safety management at Mainbrace. We take our responsibility to keep everyone safe seriously and work hard to minimise any impact during construction.

With over 30 years of practical site experience our teams are well placed to manage the high-risk construction works we oversee, our dedicated HSEQ support team then provides workplace health and safety advice, support and guidance to our teams, subcontractors and clients.

They conduct planned and spontaneous site audits and  coupled with our client’s independent audits make up our assurance program.  This robust and comprehensive program provides key insights into our safety performance which is utilised to continually improve our approach to delivering safe and successful projects.

Our Workplace Health and Safety systems are certified to AS/NZS ISO 4801:2001 ISO 45001:2018 and they are independently audited and certified every year.

Sustainability

We offer sustainability and environmental support focused on helping our clients hit their own sustainability targets. This starts at the beginning, with our Pre-Construction team offering realistic, quantified sustainable design options during design development phases. The greatest impact occurs when we capture the opportunities and design them in upfront.

Mainbrace built the first 6-Star Green Star shopping centre. We’re proud of our record in achieving Green Star construction and NABERS environmental ratings on dozens of projects. These include:

With a dedicated, experienced sustainability manager, we work alongside our clients to support their journey and find feasible sustainable options.

Given the uncertainty and cost of acquiring materials in current conditions, our emphasis on limiting material consumption will has dual benefits in affordability and sustainability. Our collaborative processes will see subcontractors and suppliers working together to make sustainable options viable. Together, we will make a bigger impact.

Uncompromised quality is at the heart of our work.

Check lists, hold points and ITP’s. We found traditional systems struggle to work effectively. They are often a hastily filled in compliance after thought. We’ve built our quality management practices in house, to deliver without adding complex and time-wasting duplicate reviews and checklists. The result is both logical and efficient – and you can be assured it is also fully certified to meet AS/NZS ISO 9001:2015.

Defect free completion is the goal. Quality checking starts day one. Better to get it right up front, than to come back and fix it later. Proactively sorting through details, design and specification never stop.

We consistently raise the benchmark on our work practices to improve efficiency and effectively manage risk without compromising the outcome.
