About Mainbrace

As Australia’s leading and most experienced retail builder, we do more than create inspired retail experiences. We build from the ground up, we know how to keep a live site trading and we know how to keep costs down – all while making sure you open on time. We constantly challenge and question processes, tools and techniques to ensure we get the best outcome for your project and our business.

At Mainbrace, it’s never just one project. It’s the beginning of a positive working relationship that always puts the project’s needs first.

Our Values

We’re in the business of building positive working relationships with all stakeholders. Known for being easy to deal with, we have developed a trusted network of partners who share and support our core values.

Teamwork, integrity, leadership and excellence; we believe everybody should have the opportunity for success. These foundations help harness the best of every individual to maintain a friendly, proactive and easy to deal with culture.

We don’t want to be the biggest. For us, it comes down to making sure we do it right every time. Our stability and shared knowledge allow us to aim higher and continue to exceed expectations for our people, and our clients.

Our Clients

Our clients range from small businesses to large corporates, and include virtually every major retailer in Australia.

We take pride in developing lasting partnerships with our clients and ensure that we deliver every time. We’re confident you could call any of our clients, and they’ll tell you a positive story about their Mainbrace project.

Mainbrace is a world class operator. They are happy to sit down from day one and plan things to come up with a strategy to save you money in the long run, and to get the product on the ground on time.

How we work

We listen, we understand, and we deliver.

Delivering your project on time and on budget is an expectation. But for us, it’s more than that. We build long-lasting relationships and become a partner you can depend on. We take the time to listen and understand your needs, helping you to achieve your goals and succeed.

When you work with Mainbrace, it’s easy to stay in touch with every aspect of your site’s progress. First of its kind, the Mainbrace App gives you a quick visual news feed for your project, including photos, contacts and daily updates. It’s construction efficiency and transparency, on the go and always on hand.

Mainbrace approached each decision with the client’s best interest in mind, quite often going over and above what was contractually required to ensure the best outcome for all stakeholders.

Our Team

Our History

Since the beginning, our purpose has been simple: to build buildings and build them well for our clients.

Mainbrace was founded by Greg Millson and Peter McKinnon in 1989 on the principles of fairness and integrity. Our focus on clients and our can-do, performance-based culture has allowed us to grow to offices in three states with 200+ staff – some of whom have been with us for over 25 years.

  1. 1989 Greg Millson and Peter McKinnon start Mainbrace
  2. 1991 Won our first Woolworths project at Dickson, worth $2.7million
  3. 1993 Hired employee #24 Rob Doust as an Undergraduate – now our Managing Director
  4. 1996 Won our largest project at the time, Wagga Wagga Marketplace - $29.9million
  5. 1997 Completed our first Coles project – Coles West Pennant Hills
  6. 2001 Michael Witts, Rob Doust and Greg Scott become Directors
  7. 2005 Completed our first ALDI project – ALDI, Rouse Hill
  8. 2007 Turnover reached $100million+
  9. 2010 Opened the Queensland state office
  10. 2012 Completed 500th retail project
  11. 2015 Opened the Victorian state office
  12. 2015 Commenced Narellan Town Centre, a $200million development
  13. 2018 Turnover reached $400million+. 1000+ retail projects delivered since 1989

Thanks to our proactive and dedicated people, we have delivered over 1,300 projects and have worked with almost every major retailer in Australia, completing 99% of projects on time and within budget. Our focus on building lasting relationships with our clients has meant that 85% of them have trusted us with multiple projects – some with as many as 400!

Financial Performance

Stability in a volatile industry

Our conservative approach and financial discipline means we have never had to rely on debt or overdraft facilities to run our business. Every project is underpinned by sufficient capital, thanks to our strong, straightforward balance sheet.

Health & Safety

The health and safety of people are paramount.

A strong safety culture starts from the top. So our leaders play an active role safety management at Mainbrace. We take our responsibility to keep everyone safe seriously and work hard to minimise any impact during construction.

With over 30 years of practical site experience, our HSEQ team then provides workplace health and safety advice, support and guidance to our teams, subcontractors and clients. They conduct planned and spontaneous site audits, and assists in developing policies and procedures.

Our Workplace Health and Safety systems are certified to AS/NZS ISO 4801:2001 and they are independently audited and certified every year.

Sustainability underpins all our futures.

When building community spaces for the future, we take our environmental responsibilities seriously. Our systems are certified to AS/NZS ISO 14001:2015 and audited each year, ensuring every project rigorously assesses its risks and impact on the local environment.

Having built Australia’s first 5 star green star shopping center, we are across sustainable construction practices. Our teams maintain their credentials and we align with industry experts to ensure we can offer this service as required.

Construction waste is a major impact from our industry. We focus all our teams on waste reduction and work with our trades to minimize, re-use and recycle. We equally bring this commitment into our offices – regularly measuring water and energy consumption and waste management; implementing new tactics to minimise our footprint each year.

Uncompromised quality is at the heart of our work.

Check lists, hold points and ITP’s. We found traditional systems struggle to work effectively. They are often a hastily filled in compliance after thought. We’ve built our quality management practices in house, to deliver without adding complex and time-wasting duplicate reviews and checklists. The result is both logical and efficient – and you can be assured it is also fully certified to meet AS/NZS ISO 9001:2015.

Defect free completion is the goal. Quality checking starts day one. Better to get it right up front, than to come back and fix it later. Proactively sorting through details, design and specification never stop.

We consistently raise the benchmark on our work practices to improve efficiency and effectively manage risk without compromising the outcome.

Through all the complexities of the project whether large or small, they used their vast retail experience to find a solution for our advantage. As the operator, we believe their skills have added significant value to our business.

At Mainbrace, we believe in making a difference within our local communities. We help community groups raise awareness of the social issues that matter most to them – and we always look for new ways to do something different, original and fun to cut through with their important messages.

Whether that’s being ahead of the trends, such as growing mos for Movember from 2006, or dyeing pink ‘Beards for Boobs’ for Pink Ribbon Day, we’re not afraid to go beyond if it means raising those much needed funds – and involving the broader construction community.

Our primary charity partner is The Property Industry Foundation, working to eradicate youth homelessness in Australia. We’re proud to have been Gold Members since 2007, and regularly help with practical support and fundraising. Mainbrace has raised over $40,000 for National Hard Hat day, and we’ve contributed through the Tour de PIF cycle, Industry Sailing Regatta, Family Car Rally day, Gala Ball and other events.

We’ve also supported the endeavours of the Salvation Army, Cancer Council, Fred Hollows Foundation Leukaemia Foundation and the Western Sydney University School of Medicine Research amongst many others.

We actively look for opportunities to engage our partners to rally behind other worthy causes, introduce change and make a difference.
